Choose the Best Airport To Explore Oregon’s Wilderness

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think about Oregon? Its incredible wilderness, of course!

You can climb towering volcanic peaks and hike through endless ancient forests one minute, before plunging into icy waters on deserted beaches the next. Oregon is like a vast adventure playground covering hundreds of thousands of square kilometres.

However, it’s a pretty big state, and the distances between some of its most stunning stretches of land can take hours to drive. So, the adventure begins before you even set foot on a trail, because choosing the right airport is essential.

Getting it right can save hours of driving, bringing you closer to the heart of your chosen landscape and giving you the chance to make the most of your time in the great outdoors.

Here’s your guide to Oregon’s wilderness regions and the best airports to fly into for each.

Eugene Airport (EUG): Best for Central Cascades & Willamette National Forest

Where it lands you: Central Oregon’s lush mountain corridor, including the McKenzie River, Three Sisters Wilderness, and Willamette National Forest.

Why choose it: Eugene Airport is one of our favourite regional airports in the state. It offers regular services from major carriers like Alaska, Delta, and United. It’s also the best stop-off for waterfall hikes and hot springs.

Kayaking on Fern Ridge Lake is one of the things to do in Eugene, Oregon

If you drive east from Eugene, you’ll quickly ascend into the Cascade Range, where emerald forests and crystal-clear rivers await. If you’re doing a solo multi-day hike here, you’ll rarely come across another human, so it’s perfect for solitude and reflection. There are some beautiful stretches of road here, too, if you’re less active but love the outdoors.

Where it lands you: Central Oregon’s high desert, including Bend, Smith Rock, Deschutes National Forest, and Newberry National Volcanic Monument.

Why choose it: If you want access to Central Oregon, Redmond Airport awaits your arrival. It has decent connectivity to places like Seattle, Denver, and San Francisco, and you’re only a 20-minute drive from Bend.

Central Oregon is all high desert terrain, so it’s great for exploring places like Smith Rock for world-class climbing, or you could even kayak down the Deschutes River.

Why choose it: Southwest Oregon Regional Airport is the most direct air link to the remote and rugged South Coast. Few tourists venture this far, so if you’re craving pristine coastline and quiet seaside trails, you’ve hit the jackpot.

While it has limited service, flying into North Bend shaves hours off what would otherwise be a long drive. From here, you’re right beside the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area and within reach of iconic stops like Shore Acres State Park and the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort.
