1. Boiler Bay State Scenic Viewpoint
Boiler Bay is your perfect first stop for breathtaking views of the Oregon coast. This scenic viewpoint offers panoramic vistas, with Fogerty Beach visible in the distance and rugged rock formations framing the coastline.
You’ll find picnic tables, a restroom, and plenty of parking—making it an ideal spot for a quick stretch or a leisurely break.
If you’re craving beach access, Fogerty Beach is just a short drive down the road.
2. Pirate Cove Scenic View Area
Hidden within a quiet residential area, Pirate Cove is a secret little spot.
This small but charming viewpoint features a short trail that winds along the edge of a peninsula, providing stunning views of the rocky coastline and nearby coves.
Keep in mind that parking is extremely limited, with only two spots available (literally!), so plan accordingly and be extra responsible since you’re so close to local homes.
3. Depoe Bay Scenic Park
This park is a fantastic place to take in the coastal beauty while staying close to the heart of Depoe Bay (as if it’s that big, but still!).
You can stroll along the sidewalk to soak in the ocean views while exploring local shops and businesses just across the street.
The park also houses the OPRD Whale Watching Center, where you can learn all about these majestic creatures and their migration patterns.
4. Whale Watching Tours
Depoe Bay is famously known as the “Whale Watching Capital of the Oregon Coast,” and for good reason.
Numerous local operators offer guided whale-watching tours that depart right from the harbor.
These tours are the best thing to do in Depoe Bay and provide an up-close look at gray whales, which are frequently spotted in the area, especially during migration seasons.
Knowledgeable guides share fascinating facts about marine life and help you spot not only whales but also sea lions, seals, and seabirds.
The best time to see the whales is from June to November, and it can be cold on the boat, so wear appropriate clothing. You’ll have to catch a last-minute cruise elsewhere if you want a warm boat ride out on the water!
5. Depoe Bay: World’s Smallest Harbor!
Depoe Bay proudly boasts the title of the “World’s Smallest Harbor,” and it’s worth a visit for its charm alone.
Snap some photos of the harbor and its iconic bridge, and keep an eye out for boats navigating the challenging channel that connects the harbor to the open sea.
Speaking of that bridge, be careful standing in the area. This area can have insane waves, and spouting horns that can occur at any time. This means water splashes against the area and huge spouts of water soak anything in its way!
6. The Horn Public House and Depoe Bay Brewing Company
After all that exploring, treat yourself to a meal or a drink at The Horn Public House and Depoe Bay Brewing Company. Enjoy craft beer brewed on-site alongside a menu of hearty pub favorites. (exactly what we did!)
The ocean views from the dining area make this the ideal place to take a mid-day break from riding the Oregon coast.
7. Rocky Creek State Scenic Viewpoint
If you’re hoping to spot some whales without getting on a boat, Rocky Creek is the place to be. This viewpoint offers sweeping views of the ocean, and if you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of a whale breaking the surface.
We didn’t expect to see anything, but we got a show of a whale breeching in the distance!
With a couple of picnic tables and benches available, it’s a great spot for a quick bite or leg stretch.
8. Otter Crest State Scenic Viewpoint
This simple yet beautiful viewpoint is all about the details. Informational placards provide insights into the area’s history and geology, and a small visitor center and gift shop add a bit of extra charm.
To make the most of this spot, take the Otter Crest Loop Road.
This scenic detour connects Rocky Creek to Otter Crest and eventually to Devil’s Punchbowl, offering an unforgettable coastal drive with fewer cars and stunning views around every corner!
