Silver Falls has a 134-foot waterfall that nearly vanishes every summer, and fall rain is what brings it back

The best waterfall at Silver Falls State Park is the one that nearly vanishes every summer. Winter Falls drops 134 feet, with about 100 of those feet in one clean plunge, but it only really performs when the rain comes back.

That makes this the time of year to pay attention. The wet season is how this waterfall gets its name and its reputation.

Why Winter Falls is different

Most of the waterfalls at Silver Falls run through the dry months. Winter Falls does not. The creek feeding it only flows in the wetter part of the year, and by late summer it shrinks to a trickle.

Once the autumn rain settles in, the creek fills back up and the falls turns into a proper curtain. Winter and early spring are when it looks its best, so an overcast, damp day is exactly the right day to go.

How to reach it

Winter Falls sits on the north side of the Trail of Ten Falls, a short side trip off the Canyon Trail, not far from Middle North Falls. The Winter Falls Trailhead is one of the park’s separate access points, which means you can see it without committing to the whole loop.

It is a short walk, roughly a mile or less round trip, and you will feel the climb back out of the canyon more than you expect. Dogs and bikes are not allowed on the Winter Falls trail, so leave the pup at home for this one.

Make it a bigger day

If you want more, the full Trail of Ten Falls loop is 7.2 miles with about 800 feet of elevation change, rated moderate. We have a full breakdown of every waterfall and route option on the Trail of Ten Falls if you want to pick your version.

Middle North Falls is the natural neighbor to pair with Winter Falls. It has a mossy amphitheater of its own, and the two together make a very good wet-weather morning.

Middle North Falls is one of the most majestic waterfalls in Silver Falls State Park.

What to know before you go

Wet-season hiking comes with wet-season trails. The park warns that rain, snow and ice can make trails and roads slick, so allow extra time, turn back if you feel unsafe, and bring a headlamp since the park has little lighting after dark. Check the park advisories on the Oregon State Parks site for current conditions.

Parking requires a day-use permit: $10 for Oregon residents and $12 for out-of-state visitors, bought at the trailhead fee machines. Northwest Forest Passes and America the Beautiful passes do not count here, because this is a state park.

So here is the question: do you chase the full loop on a sunny day, or save your trip for a rainy morning when Winter Falls is at full volume? Tell us which one you would pick.

Trip tips: grab a rental car to get out here, lock in your hotel before the good rooms are gone, or skip both and book a camper van instead.

Rules and fees change, so always confirm current requirements before you go.
