Benham Falls is the biggest waterfall on the Deschutes River, and the trail there is basically flat
Six thousand years ago, a fissure on the south side of Lava Butte sent a river of basalt straight into the Deschutes south of Bend. The lava dammed the channel and backed up a lake that stretched nearly to Sunriver, and it held for roughly 4,000 years before the river finally broke through. What’s left of that break is Benham Falls — the biggest waterfall on the entire upper Deschutes.
You don’t have to work for the view. From the Benham Falls West trailhead off Century Drive, the out-and-back along the Deschutes River Trail runs 1.7 miles round trip with about 55 feet of elevation gain — flat enough that it barely counts as a workout, shaded enough under the ponderosas that it doesn’t feel like a parking-lot waterfall either.

Which side should you start from? Century Drive is the faster approach if you’re coming from Bend, but the east-side trail out of Sunriver works too — it’s 6.7 miles round trip with 196 feet of gain, tracing the river the whole way. Either route lands you at the same spot: a wide lava shelf where the whole river narrows and drops.
Don’t let the calm water upstream fool you. Benham is rated Class V for boats — the same rating reserved for expert-only whitewater — and the current picks up speed well before the drop, which is exactly why signs along the trail tell paddlers and swimmers to get out long before they can see the falls.
Both trailheads charge a $5 day-use fee per vehicle, covered by a Northwest Forest Pass or any interagency pass. Bring exact change or grab a pass ahead of time — there’s no cell signal out here to pull one up on your phone.
Want to cover more ground? The Deschutes River Trail keeps going north past Benham toward Dillon Falls and Lava Island, and mountain bikers regularly turn that stretch into a longer out-and-back. The same current warnings apply at every drop along the way, not just this one.
August is a good window for it — the falls are still running full off summer snowmelt, and the tree cover keeps most of the West Trail shaded until midday. Go early and there’s a real chance you’ll have the overlook to yourself.
Bring water shoes if you plan to scramble the lava rock at the viewpoint, and budget under an hour if you’re doing the short version from Century Drive. It’s an easy add-on to a Bend or Sunriver day, not a destination that needs one of its own.
Trip tips: grab a rental car to get out here from Bend, or lock in a hotel nearby if you’re making a weekend of Central Oregon. Grab a Northwest Forest Pass ahead of time so you’re not scrambling for cash at the trailhead.
